| What's New? |
Wally and I have been hard at work planning upcoming events - clambake, chapter weekend at the Highland Center, upcoming Fall Gathering in Maryland and our Annual Meeting in November at the Butcher Block Restaurant. We hope for many more opportunities to get together to meet and greet old and new friends and participate in the club events.
August was a challenging month, for we found with all the rain, heat, and people off enjoying vacations or doing other activities, hiking became sporadic. As the summer came to a close and the weather got cooler, our club picked up again with people calling to sign up for hikes. We do have our regular hikes, mid-week hikers and the AARP Group so everyone should be able to find a hike that is just right for them!
Our November Banquet will be a highlight with Carol White, a wellknown hiker/writer, as our featured speaker. We only have 65 places available so be sure to sign up early this year.
The AARP group was pleased to receive 40 suggestions of wonderful hiking places from Martha and Fred Schroeder. We are all excited about where this group is going next! Now we just need to get our Kevin Cox, Outing Chair, back up to speed. He is recovering from a broken leg and expects to be back on the trail in October. No, it didn't happen while he was hiking!
As I write this article, Billy and I are looking forward to the tasty clambake tomorrow. Yum!

Annual Chapter Meeting:
This year's annual meeting will be held at the Butcher Block Restaurant, 1632 Central Ave, Albany, NY on Thursday, November 20. Social hour will begin at 5:30 with dinner at 6:30. A business meeting, including the election of new officers, and program will follow.
Carol Stone White will be the featured speaker for this year's Annual Dinner Meeting. Her latest book, Catskill Peak Experiences, has been on the bookshelves for several months, and many of us have been thrilled by it. The book is subtitled, "Mountaineering Tales of Endurance, Survival, Exploration and Adventure from the Catskill 3500 Club." She has finished writing a similar book dealing with the Adirondack Mountains. She will share with us what was involved in writing both books, along with her slides. Accompanying Carol will be her husband and hiking partner, David White, who is the current membership chairman of the Catskill 3500 Club.
Reservations for the Annual Dinner Meeting are required and we are limited to 65 places. See the Fall 2008 Western Slope Newsletter for details and reservation information.

Follow the link below to view the committees we have set up to service the Mohawk Hudson Chapter. Members, and prospective new members, should contact the committee chairman directly to volunteer to be part of a committee. See the club officer and committee list for addresses and telephone numbers. There are tasks from short well defined ones to long term research projects. There are armchair tasks and outdoor tasks. Everyone interested can contribute and be a valued member of the committee and the chapter. It really can provide a great deal of fun and self satisfaction. Click here to go to our Volunteer Page.

Mohawk Hudson Chapter
Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club, a nonprofit organization with more than 80,000 members, promotes the protection, enjoyment, and wise use of the mountains, rivers, and trails of the Northeast. We believe that the mountains and rivers have an intrinsic worth and also provide recreational opportunity, spiritual renewal, and ecological and economic health for the region. We encourage people to enjoy and appreciate the natural world because we believe that successful conservation depends on this experience.
